The Thermal Sunyaev-zel’dovich Signature of Baryons in the Local Universe

چکیده
Using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate the prospects of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (tSZ) effect to detect the missing baryons in the local universe. We find that at least 80% of the tSZ luminosity is generated in collapsed structures, and that ∼ 70% of the remaining diffuse tSZ luminosity (i.e., ∼ 15% of the total) comes from overdense regions with δgas >10, such as filaments and superclusters. The gas present in slightly overdense and underdense regions with δgas < 10, despite making up 50% of the total baryon budget, leaves very little tSZ signature: it gives rise to only ∼ 5% of the total tSZ luminosity. Thus, future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations will be sensitive to, at best, one half of the missing baryons, improving the current observational status, but still leaving one half unobserved. Since most of the tSZ is generated in haloes, we find a tight correlation between gas pressure and galaxy number density. This allows us to predict the CMB Comptonization from existing galaxy surveys and to forecast the tSZ effect from the local structures probed by the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) galaxy catalog. The Thermal Sunyaev Zel ’ dovich effect : a powerful probe for missing baryons
About 90% of baryons in the universe have thus far escaped direct observation. This is known as the missing baryon problem. The Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect (SZ effect) has the potential to directly measure the state of the majority of these missing baryons. The next generation CMB experiments such as AMIBA will provide an unbiased sample of the intergalactic medium through the SZ effect. The exis...

The energy fed by active galactic nuclei to the surrounding diffuse baryons changes their amount, temperature, and distribution; so in groups and in member galaxies it affects the X-ray luminosity and also the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect. Here we compute how the latter is enhanced by the transient blastwave driven by an active quasar, and is depressed when the equilibrium is recovered with a depl...

متن کاملLyman-alpha forest-CMB cross-correlation and the search for the ionised baryons at high redshift
The intergalactic neutral hydrogen which is responsible for the Lyα forest of quasar absorption lines is a tracer of much larger amounts of ionised hydrogen. The ionised component has yet to be detected directly, but is expected to scatter CMB photons via the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect. We use hydrodynamic simulations of a LambdaCDM universe to create mock quasar spectra and CMB sky maps from th...
متن کاملKinetic Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect from Halo Rotation
We discuss the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) contribution to cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations due to the coherent rotational velocity component of electrons within halos. For typical clusters of mass a few times 10 M , this rotational scattering effect produces a distinct dipole-like temperature distribution with a peak fluctuation of the order a few μK, depending on...
